modern filipino heroes

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart,
as working for the Lord, not for men.
Colossians 3:23

They are heroes. And they are Filipinos!

Sajid Bulig
On July 2, 1993, a pagoda carrying hundreds of Catholic devotees during the annual pagoda festival in Bocaue, Bulacan sank into the muddy Bocaue River. About 279 people, including children, drowned in the incident. One victim, Sajid Bulig, died a hero after saving four children out of the river.

Aris Canoy Espinosa
On January 30, 1994, Aris Canoy Espinosa, a 13-year-old boy from Lanao del Norte province, did something for his friends. A grenade on the ground was about to explode near the children. Aris quickly jumped and covered the grenade with his own body. The children were saved, thanks to the sacrifice of Aris!

Rona Mahilum
On May 26, 1996, a fire broke out inside a house in Barangay Divina Colonia, Sagay town, Negros Occidental province. Rona Mahilum, a young girl, sustained third degree burns on her back. Despite the pain, she rescued her five brothers and sisters out of the house on fire. Then she tried to put out the fire with water from the nearby well. In 1997, Rona was cited for her bravery and heroism. Amazing!

Chrisanta Seboc
On July 5, 1996, Chrisanta Seboc, a four-year girl from Barangay Sta. Teresa in Jordan town, Guimaras province saved the lives of her three-year-old sister and two-year-old brother from fire which engulfed their house at a time their parents were away for work. She was about to rescue another sister, an infant, when her neighbors stopped her from going into the house on fire. She cried because she could not help her.

Enteng Tagle
In its September 2002 issue, the Reader’s Digest cited the heroics of Enteng Tagle, who was ten years old when he saved the lives of his one-year-old brother and eight-year-old playmate at the Payatas tragedy on July 12, 2000. Nearly 500 garbage scavengers who were living literally at the Payatas dumpsite in Quezon City were buried alive under tons of garbage when a 50-foot garbage mountain collapsed on their makeshift houses at the height of torrential rains.

Agapito and Garcia
In the devastating earthquake that hit Luzon in June 1990, Florencio Agapito and Robin Garcia of Cabanatuan City died helping their schoolmates out of the Christian Colleges of the Philippines building that collapsed.

Cayabyab and Naga
In November 2002, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has recognized 15-year-old Rico Cayabyab, 12-year-old Elorde Naga, and two adult fishermen of Paranaque City for saving three survivors, including an Australian tourist, from an airplane crash at the Manila Bay on November 11.

Godofredo Latoga
In 1985, Godofredo Latoga lost his life while rescuing his tour group members from a fire at the Pines Hotel.

Emilio Advincula
Emilio Advincula, a taxi driver, has been cited for his sheer honesty. In 1996, his passenger, a Filipino expatriate, left jewelry amounting to P2 million and several thousands of US dollars inside the car. Advincula returned everything.

Ma. Fe Sotelo
Ma. Fe Sotelo, a security guard, achieved her dream of becoming a police officer when the national police waived its height and age requirements just for her. This was after she returned P500,000 to a Chinese businessman who left his bag at the comfort room of the Festival Mall in Alabang on January 7, 2003. The businessman tried to give her money as a reward but the honest guard politely declined the offer. She said she did not think twice about returning the money.

back with a vengeance…

nah… i’m just back from my vacation. I enjoyed it so much as well as Nicole, though there are some flaws like some petty quarrels and the fact that I forgot to bring my digicam. waaaaahh. But all in all, the experience with my love one is memorable even without the use of a digicam (sourgraping) hehehe. It was her first experience to swim in a beach, and that was as she said best experience of her life. I introduced her to my relatives in zambales.

xmas is near…

hindi malamig ang xmas ko ngayon kaya sobra ang saya ko… but it doesn’t mean that you can’t be happy when you are single… here are some things single people think to brighten up their day. BE HAPPY THOUGH YOU ARE SINGLE… it doesn’t mean you are alone. ENJOY LIFE!

1) WALANG MAKULIT,WALANG PASAWAY
Wala kang kailangan pagpasensyahan o kailangan intindihin. You are your own bossing.Walang magsasaway, walang magsesermon.

 2) WALANG PIPIGIL SAYO!
Walang magsasaway kung anong gusto mong kainin.Walang magsasaway kung anong gusto mong suotin. You can be a slob as you can be.Pero hinay-hinay lang kasi baka mahirapan kang bumalik sa dati mong anyo…

3) NA-APPRECIATE MO LALO YUNG PAGIGING INDEPENDENT
Ang pagiging single ay masaya kasi may time ka ng gawin ang kahit anong gusto mo at syempre a lot of time for your own self-improvement.From time to time kailangan mong magluto by your own o kaya maglinis ng flat mo o kaya maglaba ng brif mo.Hassle man pero kahit papano natutunan natin ang maging responsible minsan…

5) MORE TIME FOR ACTIVITIES
Wala! madami ka na ding time to hang-out with your barkada and play basketball.

Pag me girlfriend kasi kailangan mo pang ayusin sked mo according to her schedule.Tsk, now you are single…..you can do anything you desire.

8.) YOU CAN FOCUS MORE ON YOUR CAREER
Since single, madami ng time para sa magings focus sa trabaho o kaya naman sa pag-aaral.Wala ka na gaanong iniisip.Yung extre time mo pwede mong gamitin pampalakas kay boss or extra time to work an extra effort for that school work and you don’t have to worry anything about you lovelife..

my fave na kare-kare

Being half kapampangan and half ilocano, I learned how to cook different filipino dishes like sinigang, adobo, menudo, ginataang pugita and other stuffs … but this fave of mine which is called kare-kare is really been quite a puzzle for me. Maybe because i rather eat it than learn how to cook it…

Well maybe someday i’ll really try to learn how to cook it.

Traditionally, kare-kare was cooked with freshly ground roasted peanuts and rice. Well, there’s nothing like cooking it that way, but other people find the procedure too much for today’s busy lifestyle. The easiest option is, of course, to get one of those ready mixes that are abundant in supermarkets. Finally, about bagoong alamang. What is it??? Bagoong alamang is a paste of salted and fermented shrimp fingerlings. I guess it’s an acquired taste. My family usually doesn’t put any more bagoong coz my mom is allergic to it they just replace it with salt. But for other Filipinos the partner of Kare-kare is bagoong, it is a must have for them.

And this is how my family cook kare-kare.

Here’s the ingredients that my family usually use:

pisngi ng baka – melts in your mouth not in your hand

rumen or reticulum tripe (twalya) – syempre dapat meron nito (must have)

peanut butter (mani) – for the sweet taste

banana bud (puso ng saging) – my fave about kare-kare

annato (atsuete) – for coloring

ground rice (giniling na bigas) – pampalapot, for thickness

string beans (sitaw) – dagdag abubot minsan

garlic (bawang) – pang gisa purpose

onion (sibuyas) – pang gisa purpose

other ingredients we don’t use

oxtail (buntot) cut 2 in. long – i barely eat something from it

anchovies (bagoong alamang) – my mom’s allergic with it

egg plants (talong) – i don’t eat this stuff

pechay – we just don’t, i don’t know the reason

ox legs (pata) – wala ring laman kaya ayoko
